In a corner of Watanuki’s spic-and-span kitchen, a postcard lays innocently atop a table.

Watanuki sighs at it, smoothing his apron down with wet hands, flips the little piece of cardboard over in his fingertips as if it burns.

He already knows what it says in its clean, careful strokes:

“Watanuki,

How are you? The weather here is fine/dull/lacking. I miss your takoyaki/bentou/cooking. Keep safe,

Doumeki.”

No originality whatsoever, and no doubt written in his usual deadpan manner.

Today though, there’s a postscript: “Until tomorrow.”

Watanuki sighs again and tucks the missive into his pocket.

Ten minutes later, the grocer’s bell is ringing.
